Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Notary Public?

A Notary Public is an official commissioned by the State of Iowa to witness the signing of important documents, verify identity, and help prevent fraud.

What types of documents can you notarize?

I can notarize a wide variety of documents, including:

  • Acknowledgments and jurats

  • Power of Attorney forms

  • Wills and trusts (client must understand document & notary cannot provide legal advice)

  • Real estate documents

  • Affidavits and sworn statements

  • Copy certifications

  • Business agreements

What do I need to bring to my appointment?

Please bring:

  • The document(s) you need notarized (filled out but not signed yet)

  • A valid, government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license, passport, or state ID)

Can you provide legal advice or draft documents?

No. Notaries are not attorneys and cannot give legal advice, interpret documents, or draft legal paperwork. For legal questions, you’ll need to consult a licensed attorney.

Do all signers need to be present?

Yes. All individuals whose signatures need notarization must be present with proper ID at the appointment.

Can you notarize for family members?

In Iowa, a notary can notarize for family members as long as the notary is not a party to the transaction or directly benefiting from it. However, to avoid conflicts of interest, it is generally recommended that another notary be used.

What forms of ID are acceptable?

We accept government-issued IDs that are current, valid, and contain a photo and signature, such as:

  • Driver’s license

  • State ID card

  • Passport

  • U.S. military ID

Do you offer mobile notary services?

Not yet, but it’s coming soon! Currently, I provide in-person and mobile notary services within Iowa. I am in the process of adding Remote Online Notarization, which will allow you to have documents notarized conveniently and securely over a video call, without needing to meet in person. Stay tuned for updates!

How much does it cost?

Fees are based on Iowa’s allowed notarial fees plus any applicable travel charges. I will provide a clear price before the appointment.

Can you notarize documents for use in other states or countries?

Yes. As long as the notarization is performed within Iowa and follows Iowa law, the document may be valid in other states and countries (depending on their acceptance requirements).

What if my document is in another language?

The notarial certificate (the part the notary completes) must be in English. However, we can notarize documents written in another language as long as you and we understand the notarial wording, and you understand what you are signing.
